The Magic Number represents the combined total of wins by the division leader and losses by the trailing team needed to mathematically clinch 1st place.

Why did Game 163 tiebreaker games get eliminated in MLB?
With the expanded 12-team postseason format introduced in 2022, MLB eliminated regular-season tiebreaker games (Game 163) to prevent travel and rest inequities before the Wild Card Series. All ties are now resolved via statistical tiebreakers starting with head-to-head records.
