Sarah Greenwood Theatrical Concept

Conceived during pre-production when budget constraints prevented shooting entirely on location in St. Petersburg, Joe Wright and production designer Sarah Greenwood built over 100 interconnected sets inside a single dilapidated 19th-century theater at Shepperton Studios.

High Russian imperial society is staged as literal theatrical artifice: aristocratic characters constantly observe one another from opera boxes, moving seamlessly from stage-deck ballrooms into the flyloft rafters (Levin's pastoral oats) and down into the orchestra pit (the fatal railway tracks).
