Why Swiveling Gear Matters

Standard aircraft must align their fuselage with the runway centerline right before touchdown using rudder slips. Due to the B-52's immense 185-foot wingspan, dipping a wing near the ground in crosswinds risks catastrophic wingtip strike. Swiveling main gear allows the bomber to land pointed sideways into the wind while rolling straight down the runway.

Quad-Bogie Geometry

The B-52 features four main landing gear trucks arranged in a tandem configuration. Hydraulically interconnected, all four bogies rotate up to ±20 degrees left or right from the aircraft centerline. This ensures all eight main tires roll parallel to the actual runway ground track vector.

Eliminating Lateral Sideloads

Touchdown with an unaligned gear generates severe lateral tire scrub forces (over 180+ kN in storm conditions). By matching the swiveled gear angle exactly to the crosswind drift angle, sideloads are reduced to near 0 kN, preventing tire blowouts and structural gear failures.
