How Balanced Cantilever Construction Works

Without ground scaffolding, concrete box segments are attached symmetrically to both sides of a central pier. High-strength steel post-tensioning tendons thread through the top flange to counteract massive downward cantilever moments. Once opposite arms meet, a mid-span closure key segment is poured and cured, redistributing moments into a continuous beam structure able to carry heavy live traffic loads.
