In baseball lore, you only need 3 outs to retire the side. However, the official rules explicitly permit an advantageous fourth out when a preceding violation occurred.
Rule 5.09(c)(1) & (2) - Retouch & Missing Bases: Any runner shall be called out on appeal if they fail to retouch their base after a fly ball is caught, or fail to touch each base in advancing.
Rule 5.09(c)(4) - The Advantageous 4th Out: "Appeal plays may be made after the third out has been made, but before the infielders leave the field... If an appeal call would result in a third out that nullifies a run, the appeal out shall take precedence."
Time Play vs. Force Play: A run DOES score if the 3rd out is a non-force tag play made AFTER the runner crosses the plate (Rule 5.08(a)). Hence, the defense MUST execute the 4th out appeal at 3B to wipe off the run!
