What does reciprocal uploading mean in this model?

A receiver records the peer that supplied a piece. The modeled tit-for-tat choice ranks those prior receipts and opens selected upload directions. This is an educational simulation, not a protocol-complete client.

Pieces transfer instantly as Boolean state changes. Speed parameters are authored inputs, not measurements. Pieces per tick counts modeled transfers; it cannot establish Mbps, real download time or a strategy’s performance advantage.

Try a worked example

If A supplies a piece to B, B records one receipt from A. That contribution can influence B’s next upload allocation. It does not mean A downloaded from B. A permitted A-to-B transfer also does not automatically permit B-to-A transfer.

Compare the model to the protocol

BEP 3 distinguishes choking from interest and describes transfer in the permitted direction. Real peers request blocks and verify a completed piece’s hash before advertising it. This model keeps piece flags and contribution counts without network traffic or integrity verification. BEP 3: BitTorrent Protocol Specification

Read the telemetry correctly

Incomplete-Peer Mean averages only peers still downloading; completed peers leave that group, so it need not rise smoothly. Normalized Receipt Count divides accumulated receipts by active contributors and an authored factor of ten; it is not a percentage of reciprocal traffic. Piece Selection names the chosen rule, not measured efficiency.

Use the controls for investigation

Pause before stepping so automatic ticks do not confound observations. Compare piece matrices and choke allocations, not just the labels. Presets and peer properties use randomized state, so a new reset changes conditions. CSV rows capture current peer state, with authored speed-parameter labels and simulation scope.
