Silhouettes & Negative Space Composition

K (Ryan Gosling) is repeatedly framed in strong back-lit silhouettes against monumental architectural scale, emphasizing replicant isolation in an indifferent world.

Moving Caustic Water Patterns Optics

In the ASC interview, Deakins describes chasing Fresnel lamps for one Wallace scene and wave machines moving water for caustics in another. This canvas draws animated highlight shapes instead of simulating those rigs.

Monochromatic Density (Amber & Cyan) Color Theory

The ASC interview describes colored lighting, lens filters and smoke for the Vegas look. The amber and cyan palettes here are authored interpretations, not measured film colors or verified physical dust properties.

What does this canvas actually simulate?

A procedural drawing combines palette colors, translucent haze, animated highlights and random grain. Preset names are independent scene references. No film frame, camera response, LUT file or streaming dataset is loaded.

The Kelvin-to-RGB function is an uncalibrated approximation mixed with preset colors. Haze is a 2D overlay, not volumetric scattering. Contrast is saved metadata only. Scopes render a fresh 160×68 scene sample and random grain, so they do not exactly analyze the main canvas or exported frame. Fixed index-chart values are illustrative, not audience or revenue evidence.

Try a worked example

Reset to the amber preset and move Haze Overlay from 0.85 to 0.00: the translucent overlay disappears, while the palette and drawing remain. Move Contrast Metadata from 0.80 to 2.80: its label changes but the renderer never uses that value, so it has no image effect. Compare approximate temperature at 2000K and 9000K to see a palette change, not a recovered film white balance.

Read the cinematographer’s actual account

Deakins describes Alexa open-gate photography and Alexa Minis, not an Alexa 65 production workflow; the camera label has been corrected to an authored canvas. He also describes using the same on-set LUT as on Sicario. The look names in this lab are strings, with no lookup table applied. His discussion of lighting, filters and atmosphere gives better production context than guessed preset temperatures. ASC: Deakins interview on Blade Runner 2049

Distinguish weighted bytes from relative luminance

The waveform computes 0.2126R + 0.7152G + 0.0722B directly from 8-bit canvas channels. For a mid-gray pixel (128,128,128), that yields 128. W3C’s sRGB relative-luminance definition first normalizes and linearizes channels, giving about 0.216 for that gray. The lab performs no such conversion or IRE calibration, so its scope is labeled weighted RGB bytes rather than physical luminance. W3C: sRGB relative luminance definition

Use awards and viewership as different kinds of evidence

The Academy records 2018 wins for cinematography and visual effects for Blade Runner 2049. That verifies the awards shown here; it says nothing about streaming watchtime, rankings or revenue. The chart’s authored indices have no units, sampling method or observation timestamps and cannot support a commercial-performance conclusion. Academy: 2018 ceremony

Export an independent study

Export produces a 1200×630 PNG containing a newly rendered procedural frame, look label and chosen parameters. It is not a film still, professional LUT, calibrated grade or streaming report. Grain and animation can differ between the preview, scope sample and export. Remix keeps the selected scene and palette identity while randomizing controls; reset restores the amber preset. Range-step values and displayed remix settings now agree.
