Section 7 is where plans die. Investors don’t expect your numbers to be right — they expect the logic to be right: price × customers × growth, with visible assumptions. Model a simple subscription business:
Reality check: 15% month-over-month for a full year means 4.7× growth — exceptional. If your plan needs 30%+ every month to work, the plan is the problem. The financials layer of the tower grows and shrinks with your year-1 revenue above; watch how sensitive it is to the growth slider — that sensitivity is exactly what a reader will probe.
Why write one at all
1 · Clarity: forcing the model onto paper exposes contradictions (premium pricing + mass market, say) while they’re still free to fix. 2 · Credibility: banks and investors read plans as evidence you understand your own unit economics. 3 · Measurement: a plan converts “doing well” into testable milestones. 4 · Alignment: co-founders who write the plan together discover disagreements early — the cheapest possible time.
Keep it short: 10–15 pages beats 40. A famous Bplans/Palo Alto Software finding: entrepreneurs who wrote plans were roughly twice as likely to successfully grow or secure funding than those who didn’t — not because of the document, but because of the thinking it forces.
