🔬 The Science Behind Dawson et al. (2017)

In 2017, Dr. Paul Dawson and his research team at Clemson University investigated the potential transfer of oral bacteria when blowing out birthday candles. The team placed candles on a foil-covered styrofoam base filled with icing and had participants eat pizza prior to blowing out the candles to simulate a real birthday party environment.

Key Findings: Blowing out the candles resulted in an average bacterial count increase of 1,400% (14-fold) compared to unblown icing. In certain high-emitter individuals, bacterial contamination spiked by over 12,000%. However, the study emphasized that oral bacteria are typically harmless commensal organisms and do not pose significant health risks to healthy individuals.
