Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD)

A VSD is an opening in the interventricular septum allowing oxygenated blood from the high-pressure Left Ventricle (LV) to flow into the Right Ventricle (RV). This increases pulmonary blood flow (elevated Qp/Qs ratio) and can lead to pulmonary hypertension over time.

Primary Surgical Interventions:
  • Pledgeted Synthetic (Dacron/Gore-Tex) Patch Closure via Right Atriotomy.
  • Transcatheter Occluder Device placement in selected muscular VSDs.
  • Post-op Outcome: Restores normal non-shunting parallel-to-series circulation, normalizing Qp/Qs to 1.0.
