The Pathogen: Candidatus Liberibacter
Huanglongbing (HLB or citrus greening) is caused by the phloem-restricted unculturable bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas). Injected by the Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri) during sap feeding, CLas causes excessive callose deposition in phloem sieve plates, choking off sucrose transport from leaves to roots. Root mass dies back up to 50% before foliar symptoms even appear, resulting in small, bitter, lopsided fruit and tree collapse.
