UIAA Fall Factor Guidance

The severity of a climbing fall depends primarily on the Fall Factor (f = ΔL / L), defined as total drop distance divided by active rope length. A 10m fall on 5m of rope (f = 2.0) creates far higher peak anchor forces than a 10m fall on 50m of rope (f = 0.2).
