Metrics: CPU, latency, request counts (1-min default; 1-sec with detailed/custom metrics)
Logs: app + system logs, searchable, metric filters
Alarms: threshold or anomaly detection → SNS, Auto Scaling
Dashboards: real-time operational views

CloudTrail = the security camera / audit log

Records API calls: identity, time, source IP, parameters
Management events: control-plane ops (create/delete/modify) — on by default, 90-day Event history free
Data events: object-level ops (S3 GetObject, Lambda Invoke) — off by default, billed extra
Deliver to S3 for long retention; feed to CloudWatch Logs or Athena for analysis

Rule of thumb

Performance question → CloudWatch
Accountability / forensics question → CloudTrail
Real security posture uses both: CloudTrail events piped into CloudWatch/EventBridge alarms
