Why Hybrid Live-Action / Animation Uses Tennis Balls

When live actors like Lana Condor perform opposite iconic 2D/CGI cartoon characters like Wile E. Coyote, the animation department hasn't created the frames yet. Proper blocking requires three distinct physical passes:

  • Pass 1 (Puppet Blocking): A life-sized stitched Wile E. puppet stands on set so the camera operator frames the shot and the actor gets muscle memory for where the character stands.
  • Pass 2 (The Tennis Ball Pass): The puppeteer pulls the physical rig off set before camera rolls. A tennis ball mounted on an adjustable C-stand gives Lana a sharp point of reference so her eyes don't wander.
  • Pass 3 (Final ACME Composite): Green screens are keyed out, tracking markers are scrubbed, and hand-drawn/CGI Wile E. with ACME contraptions is composited right along that sightline vector.

Director's Sightline Telemetry Notes

If the actor's gaze diverges by more than 3.0° from the cartoon's eye trajectory, the audience instantly senses the illusion is broken. Keep the yellow tennis ball tracked cleanly to the stunt curve.
