Practical research for people doing the work

Test the opening.
Keep the promise.

Build a controlled hook experiment, adapt a useful format and compare observed response without copying someone else’s assets.

Promise

Deliver what the opening claims.

Rights

A template does not license every asset.

Variant

Adapt to a real audience need.

Evidence

Keep denominators and limitations visible.

Borrow the creative question; make your own answer.

A hook is a promise the video must keep

A strong opening makes the subject and reason to watch legible. It can show a surprising result, a recognizable problem or a concrete demonstration. Write the promise in one sentence, then check that the body delivers it. An exaggerated opening may increase initial attention while disappointing the people you wanted to help.

For a product demo, compare a problem-first opening with a result-first opening using the same honest outcome. For a reaction concept, commission a real reaction or clearly label a performance; do not present a purchased script as an independent customer experience.

Separate format inspiration from rights

A pacing pattern or editorial question can inspire new work. That does not transfer rights to a song, television clip, anime scene, creator performance or template asset. A fandom edit may involve several rights holders. The U.S. Copyright Office explains that musical works and recordings are distinct and there is no universal minimum excerpt that is automatically free to use.

Before a seeding campaign, record the specific permission, allowed destinations, term and commercial use. Gifts, affiliate relationships and paid endorsements also need appropriate disclosure; the FTC’s disclosure guidance is a useful U.S. starting point.

Vary for the audience, not to disguise duplication

Adapt the example, opening context, language or call to action to a distinct audience need. Keep the underlying factual claim consistent. Posting one asset across 30 accounts does not create 30 independent pieces of evidence or guarantee safe distribution. Account ownership and platform rules still apply.

When testing hooks, hold the rest of the asset as consistent as practical and log unavoidable differences. Organic distribution is not randomized by default. Different audience composition or timing can explain a result, so call it an observed difference rather than a causal lift.

Compare with the right denominator

Choose an event that your analytics actually exposes consistently: viewers reaching a defined point, link clicks or another measurable action. Use the same denominator for both variants. The worksheet rejects events greater than observations and reports both percentage-point and relative differences.

If A has 100 events from 1,000 observations and B has 120 from 1,000, the difference is two percentage points, or 20% relative to A. That does not establish statistical significance or future performance. Repeat promising concepts with fresh evidence, and keep the content useful even when a hook loses.

Two-variant response comparison

Replace the illustrative inputs with your own evidence. Build and download a result you can review with your team.

Change the example inputs, then build your result.

The worksheet calculates in your browser. It does not connect to your social accounts. Examples are hypothetical. The site uses its usual analytics.

Put the evidence to work.

Can I reuse a viral clip if it is short?

There is no universal safe excerpt length. Check the applicable rights and permissions.

Is a higher rate a proven winner?

It is an observed result. Audience differences and sample uncertainty remain.

Should we buy hooks before creators?

Test the creative need and rights first; purchasing an opening does not guarantee a complete useful asset.
