Universal Rules: How to Cancel Credit Cards Without Damaging Your Credit
1
Hold the Card for at least 366 Days
Never cancel or downgrade before the 1-year mark. Major banks (especially Amex with its Anti-Churning RAT team) will claw back your welcome bonus points and put a lifetime blacklist flag on your profile.
2
The 30-Day Annual Fee Grace Window
Wait until the year 2 annual fee officially posts to your statement. You then have 30 calendar days to call/chat and cancel or downgrade for a 100% full refund of the fee.
3
Ask for a Retention Offer First
Before canceling, tell customer support you are evaluating the annual fee cost. Issuers frequently offer 15,000 to 50,000 points or $100-$300 statement credits to keep the card open.
4
Request a "Product Change" (Downgrade)
Instead of closing the account, downgrade to a $0 annual fee card in the same family. You preserve your credit limit and credit history age with 0 hard inquiries.
5
Reallocate Credit Limits Before Closure
If you must close (e.g. Chase or Citi), ask the representative to transfer $5,000-$10,000 of the credit line to another open card with the same bank so your overall utilization does not spike.
6
Safeguard Accumulated Points
Amex MR and Chase UR points evaporate if you close your only points-earning card. Transfer them out to airline/hotel partners first or keep a $0-fee card open (like Amex Blue Business Plus or Chase Freedom).
