Understanding the 2027 ICC World Cup Format

After using the 10-team round-robin in 2019 and 2023, the International Cricket Council restored an expanded 14-team structure for the 2027 tournament hosted jointly by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

1. Two Groups of 7 (42 Matches)

14 nations are divided into Group A and Group B. Each team plays 6 group matches. The top 3 teams in each pool progress to the Super Six, while the bottom 4 are eliminated immediately.

2. Super Six Carryover (PCF)

Qualifiers carry forward all points and net run rate (NRR) earned against the other two advancing teams from their original group. In the Super Six, they only contest 3 matches against qualifiers from the opposing pool.

3. Knockout Climax (3 Matches)

After the 9 Super Six cross-matches, the top 4 teams on the combined Super Six table enter the traditional semi-finals (1st vs 4th and 2nd vs 3rd), culminating in the Final.
