Cryptographic Error Protection Check

Bitcoin Address Evolution

Bitcoin has 4 main formats developed over soft forks:

  • Legacy (P2PKH): Starts with 1, uses Base58Check. Highest fees.
  • Nested SegWit (P2SH): Starts with 3, supports multi-sig and SegWit backward compatibility.
  • Native SegWit (Bech32): Starts with bc1q, lower fees, base32 encoding with typo resilience.
  • Taproot (Bech32m): Starts with bc1p, Schnorr signatures, batch validation, privacy.

Ethereum & EIP-55 Checksum

Ethereum addresses are the last 20 bytes of the Keccak-256 hash of the public key, prefixed with 0x.

  • EIP-55: Encodes checksum in uppercase/lowercase hex letters based on the hash of the address string.
  • If an exchange or wallet verifies EIP-55, mistyping a single hex character changes the expected case and flags the address.
  • Unlike Bitcoin, all EVM chains (Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, BSC) share this identical 0x format.

Why Cross-Chain Errors Burn Funds

Blockchains do not communicate directly. When you send Bitcoin to an EVM address:

  • The Bitcoin miner attempts to execute the transaction script on Bitcoin rules.
  • The recipient key pair does not exist on that ledger, locking funds in an unspendable output forever.
  • Always verify address prefixes and chain routing before confirming transfers on hardware wallets or exchanges.
