Physical Mechanics: The "Dark Dimension" Hypothesis

In traditional Λ-CDM, dark energy is a rigid, unchanging cosmological constant (Λ) with an equation of state w = -1. However, 2024 results from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) combining Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and Type Ia Supernovae suggest dark energy may be dynamical and evolving over cosmic time (favoring w0 > -1 and wa < 0).

Chevallier-Polarski-Linder: w(a) = w0 + wa(1 - a) • Kaluza-Klein Mass: mn = n ℏ / (Rdark • c)

Theoretical physicists invoking the Distance Conjecture in string theory propose the Dark Dimension: an extra spatial dimension compactified at the mesoscopic scale (0.1 – 10 micrometers). As the universe expands, vacuum energy slowly dissipates as it couples into an infinite tower of light Kaluza-Klein (KK) graviton and dark matter excitations, physically causing dark energy to weaken.
