The Magic Number Formula
A magic number represents any combination of wins by the first-place team and losses by the second-place team needed to guarantee the division title:
Magic # = (G_total - W_leader - L_trailer) + 1
When the leader holds the head-to-head tiebreaker, the formula removes the +1 buffer because a tie is sufficient to clinch.
Elimination Numbers (E#)
Every chasing team possesses an Elimination Number (E#). Any trailing loss or leader victory decrements this counter:
E# = G_remaining + 1 - GB_behind_losses
Once a trailer’s E# reaches 0, it is mathematically eliminated from winning the division crown, regardless of remaining games.
Head-to-Head Swing Impact
When the division leader plays the direct runner-up in a head-to-head series, every leader victory drops the magic number by 2 full points (one leader win plus one trailer loss simultaneously).
