Aerial Optics & Obstacle Sensing Engineering Guide

1-Inch Sensor Advantage:
A 1-inch sensor (13.2 × 8.8 mm) has approximately 4× the light-gathering area of conventional 1/2.3-inch phone sensors and ~2× that of 1/1.3-inch units. This significantly reduces dynamic range clipping during aerial golden-hour photography and produces cleaner edge definition per pixel for photogrammetric reconstruction.
Ground Sampling Distance (GSD):
GSD defines the physical ground distance represented by each image pixel: GSD = (SensorWidth_mm × Altitude_m × 100) / (FocalLength_mm × ImageWidth_px). Survey grade mapping generally requires a GSD under 2.0 cm/px, whereas cinematic inspection targets under 1.0 cm/px.
Omnidirectional Sensing Envelopes:
Stereo-vision pairs calculate binocular disparity maps. At higher velocities, stopping distance scales quadratically (d = v² / (2a) + v × t_react). When entering dense branch/wire envelopes, APAS automatically generates spline corridors or halts before collision.
