Simulate Earth's dropping reflectivity ($A$) and how absorbed solar radiation ($ASR$) creates a heat imbalance ($\Delta E$), amplifying global warming by 10% to 30%.
Earth’s albedo measures the fraction of incoming solar energy reflected back into space (~29%). Recent satellite data from NASA CERES shows Earth's albedo is noticeably declining. Two major drivers explain this sudden shift:
1. IMO 2020 Clean Shipping Regulations: Sulfur emissions from global ocean vessels were slashed by ~80% in 2020. While reducing toxic air pollution, sulfur aerosols previously created bright, reflective ship-track clouds over the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Removing sulfur stripped away this unintended "sunshade".
2. Cryosphere and Low-Cloud Loss: Shrinking Arctic sea ice replaces bright ice with dark ocean water. Warmer sea surface temperatures also dissipate low stratocumulus cloud decks over tropical oceans.
For decades, global warming was modeled primarily as trapped outgoing heat (reduced $OLR$ from $CO_2$). However, declining reflectivity increases Absorbed Solar Radiation (ASR).
Because sunlight directly penetrates upper ocean layers, this extra absorbed solar heat creates an unprecedented surge in Earth's energy imbalance ($\Delta E$), adding an extra 10% to 30% to total warming rates beyond greenhouse gas forcing alone.
