Shadow Cones

Umbra: Complete occultation of light source. Penumbra: Partial blockage. Antumbra: Occulting body appears entirely within light disk (annulus).

5.14° Inclination

The Moon's orbit is tilted 5.14° to the ecliptic plane. Eclipses only occur when syzygy coincides with ascending or descending orbital nodes.

Rayleigh Scattering

During a total lunar eclipse, Earth's atmosphere refracts sunlight, scattering blue wavelengths while bending red wavelengths into the umbra (Blood Moon).
