Why Umbra Speed Exceeds Earth's Rotation
The Moon orbits Earth eastward at ~3,680 km/h. Earth rotates eastward at ~1,670 km/h at the equator. The shadow velocity is the vector difference projected onto Earth's curved spherical crust, typically 1,500 km/h to over 8,000 km/h at grazing incidence.
Umbra vs. Penumbra & Antumbra
Umbra: the inner cone where the Moon completely obscures the Sun's photosphere. Penumbra: the surrounding partial shadow spanning thousands of kilometers. Antumbra: the region beyond the umbral vertex causing an Annular eclipse.
