The Physics Behind "9 Eerie Pillars" in Daisen: During squid-fishing season off Tottori, boats deploy high-intensity metal halide lamps (~30,000–100,000 W) termed Isaribi. When an offshore cold air inversion forms with wind speeds < 2 m/s, microscopic hexagonal ice plates float horizontally through aerodynamic drag. Specular reflections off the flat basal faces create virtual images: to a coastal viewer, the light reflects along a vertical planar path, producing eerie parallel vertical beams rising thousands of meters into the sky without alien intervention or sci-fi lasers.
