How the Postseason Simulator Works
This engine models playoff basketball using calibrated possession-level tempo and rating differentials rather than coin flips. Every game accounts for:
- Possessions per 40 Minutes: Paced by team speeds (e.g. 78 to 85 possessions).
- Offensive vs. Defensive Ratings: Expected points per 100 possessions evaluated at each possession.
- Home Court Advantage (HCA): Historically worth ~3.2 net rating points in postseason play.
- Fatigue & Variance: Random possession walk calibrated to realistic standard deviation (~11 points).
- Court Shot Generator: Translates 3-point rate, paint frequency, and rim efficiency into a spatial half-court shot plot.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can lower seeds pull off upsets?
Yes. Over a Best-of-3 series, an 8-seed with a -6.0 net rating differential still maintains approximately a 22% to 28% chance of winning the series, especially when securing Game 1 on the road.
Can I customize team strengths or change the series format?
Yes. Use the preset dropdown to test parity or powerhouse scenarios, or adjust Home Court Advantage and Variance sliders to test high-chaos or neutral-court tournament conditions.
What does the exported recap contain?
The exported high-resolution PNG generates a visual bracket graphic summarizing series scores, champion, total games played, and tournament MVP team ratings ready for sharing.
