Why Assembly in the 1980s? In the 8-bit era, home micros had 1MHz–2MHz CPUs and 16KB–64KB RAM. Interpreting BASIC took hundreds of cycles per statement. Only bare-metal assembly could hit the electron beam scanline before video blanking!
