Expected Goals (xG) & Game Leverage Methodology

In modern NHL analytics (MoneyPuck, Evolving-Hockey, Natural Stat Trick), Expected Goals (xG) models assign a probability value (0 to 1) representing the likelihood that an unblocked shot attempt results in a goal. Key predictive inputs include raw distance from net center, acute shooting angle, goalie positioning/lateral displacement (rebound or pass sequence), and shooter finishing talent.

When games enter the final minutes with a 1-goal margin or an empty net, the Win Probability Added (WPA) leverage spikes exponentially. A high-danger slot shot (xG > 0.35) inside 45 seconds of regulation produces game-defining momentum shifts exceeding +14% win equity.
