Ethernet Port & Switch Topology Planner

Most Wi-Fi routers include only 3 or 4 LAN ports. Add unmanaged or PoE network switches without uplink bottlenecks, calculate port deficits, and export clean wiring schedules.

The "N - 2" Switch Math Rule

When adding an unmanaged 5-port switch to expand your network, you do not get 5 extra ports. The switch consumes 1 port on itself for the incoming uplink cable, and 1 port on your router, netting exactly +3 net usable ports. An 8-port switch nets +6.

Avoid Uplink Chokepoints

Connecting multiple high-bandwidth devices (such as a 2.5G NAS and multi-gig Wi-Fi 7 access points) downstream of a single 1 Gbps uplink creates a severe bottleneck. Always match uplink link speeds to aggregate client throughput.

PoE Power Budgeting

Power over Ethernet allows IP cameras, access points, and VoIP phones to run over standard Cat5e/Cat6 copper without power bricks. Standard 802.3af supplies up to 15.4W; 802.3at (PoE+) supplies 30W. Ensure your switch has sufficient total wattage.
