Step-Printing Optical Grammar: Wong Kar-wai & Christopher Doyle undercranked the Arriflex 35 III camera to 6 or 8 fps during nighttime runs through Tsim Sha Tsui and the Cross-Harbour Tunnel. The lab at Salon Films then step-printed each negative frame three or four times back onto 24 fps positive stock, producing the legendary staccato motion smear where time stretches and characters float through blurred neon space.
