The Historiographical Verdict: Dual Paternity Model
Historical consensus among historians of science distinguishes between father of machine intelligence/theoretical computer science (Alan Turing) and father and founder of Artificial Intelligence as an autonomous academic discipline (John McCarthy). McCarthy intentionally coined the term in 1955 to break away from Norbert Wiener's cybernetics paradigm, which dominated the Macy Conferences.
Dartmouth 1956 Cohort Attribution McCarthy did not act alone: the 1956 summer research project was co-organized with Marvin Minsky (MIT AI Lab co-founder), Claude Shannon (father of Information Theory), and Nathaniel Rochester (IBM 704 architect who wrote the first symbolic AI program).
The Cybernetics Break McCarthy explicitly acknowledged choosing "artificial intelligence" instead of "automata studies" or "cybernetics" to avoid submitting to Norbert Wiener's feedback-loop mathematical framework and to establish symbolic logic as the central paradigm.
