Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts Judging Criteria Reference Tap to view official ABC criteria
1. Effective Striking / Grappling (Primary Assessment)
Effective striking is judged by determining the impact of legal strikes executed by a contestant and the immediate and cumulative damage produced. Heavy punches, head kicks, and visible stun have far greater weighting than volume jabbing. Takedowns that lead directly to submission attempts or damaging ground strikes count heavily; non-damaging position holding without offensive output does not override significant standing strikes.
2. Effective Aggressiveness & Octagon Control
Effective aggressiveness means moving forward with genuine offensive attempts rather than just walking forward into strikes. Cage control is defined by dictating the pace, place, and position of the bout. Note: Under modern Unified Rules, these two criteria are ONLY considered if effective striking and grappling are judged to be 100% equal in a round.
10-8 Rounds: Awarded when one fighter wins the round by a large margin through cumulative damage and dominance throughout the 5 minutes.
