Under the revised Unified Rules, a 10-8 round occurs when one fighter wins by a large margin using Impact, Dominance, and Duration (the 3 D's). If a fighter inflicts heavy damage and dominates position for the majority of the 5 minutes without the opponent mounting meaningful offense, judges are strongly encouraged to award a 10-8.
Why isn't top control time rewarded as much as striking damage?
The Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC) rules state that control time alone without damage or submission threats does not win a round over a fighter who lands heavier, more impactful strikes from distance or off their back. Impact is the primary scoring metric.
