Judging MMA Rounds: Prioritization & Scoring Matrix

Under the Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports (ABC) Unified Rules of MMA, rounds are judged using tiered primary and secondary criteria:

1. Effective Striking & Grappling The primary criterion. Immediate or cumulative damage and impactful offensive attacks that carry fight-ending potential take top precedence over non-damaging volume.
2. Effective Aggressiveness Secondary tier, invoked only if striking and grappling are 100% equal. Determined by moving forward and attempting fight-ending finishes rather than passive pursuit.
3. Fighting Area / Octagon Control Third tier, invoked only when effective striking, grappling, and aggressiveness are completely deadlocked. Evaluates who dictates pace and cage positioning.
