Why Do Real Voice Actors Get Accused of Being AI?
When an indie game developer's spouse recorded dialogue for their project, players flooded reviews claiming the lines were "cheap AI generation." In modern game production, aggressive post-processing pipelines often unintentionally erase the biological markers humans use to perceive organic speech.
1. The Death of Inhalation Transients
Automated noise gates and de-noisers cut silence too sharply. Biological speech contains micro-inhalations, lip smacks, and room decay before plosives. When a gate silences the background to digital zero, the ear flags it as text-to-speech synthesis.
2. Pitch Correction Clamping (Zero-Jitter)
Human pitch is never mathematically static; it constantly wobbles by 1.5% to 3.5% (jitter). Heavy pitch snapping or robotic formant transposing removes natural micro-tremor, creating a rigid phase alignment characteristic of neural voice clones.
3. Over-Filtering Chest Resonance
Game audio designers frequently high-pass voice lines at 250Hz–300Hz to prevent muddiness in sound effects mixes. Cutting fundamental human chest resonance flattens warmth, forcing the listener to rely only on synthetic-sounding sibilance.
