Why doesn't Standard German simply add -s like English and Dutch?
Irminonic (Elbe Germanic)
Ancestor of High German. Maintained strong declensional stem inflections (vocalic & consonantal stems) and root apophony/umlaut. Plural -s was never standard.
Ingaevonic (North Sea)
Ancestor of English, Low German, and Frisian. Generalized the Proto-Germanic -as masculine nominative plural into the universal -s plural seen in modern English.
Modern Exception: German uses -s primarily for foreign loanwords (Autos, Büros, Cafés), Northern coastal idioms (Kerls), abbreviations (LKWs), or colloquialisms.
