The Red gene ($O$) is sex-linked on the X chromosome. Because male cats are $XY$, they need only one copy ($X^O Y$) to be completely orange. Females ($XX$) require two copies ($X^O X^O$). In typical feral and domestic populations, roughly 80% of all solid orange cats are males!
In heterozygous females ($X^O X^o$), random embryonic X-chromosome inactivation (lyonization) silences either the orange or black allele in each skin cell lineage, creating the striking mosaic calico/tortoiseshell pattern seen across the coat.
All orange cats show tabby stripes! The pheomelanin pigment produced by the $O$ gene is epistatic over the non-agouti ($a/a$) gene, preventing solid black masking and guaranteeing visible tabby banding regardless of agouti status.
