Why Baku Strategy is Won on the Pit Wall
The Baku City Circuit is one of Formula 1's most demanding street venues. It marries the tightest technical section on the calendar (the 7.6-meter narrow Turn 8 castle complex) with the longest full-throttle drag: 2.2 km from Turn 16 through to Turn 1 on Neftchilar Avenue.
Because overtaking on the main straight is high percentage with DRS, pit stop timing dictates whether a driver rejoins into dirty air or clean air. Pit lane time loss under green flag conditions is approximately 21.2 seconds, but drops to 13.4 seconds under Virtual Safety Car (VSC) and 10.8 seconds under full Safety Car. Pitting during a neutralized race window grants an effective 8–10 second gain.
Pirelli Tyre Compound Degradation Curves
- Soft (C5 Red): +1.1s initial pace advantage over Hard, but suffers thermal degradation starting lap 12. Cliff reached around lap 18 on heavy fuel.
- Medium (C4 Yellow): Optimal race start tyre for flexibility. Degrades predictably at ~0.045s/lap, maintaining stability through lap 22–26.
- Hard (C3 White): High durability, warm-up takes 2 laps, low degradation rate (~0.018s/lap). Capable of completing 35+ laps in Baku's cooler evening track temperatures.
