Why the race leader doesn't need to win stages: Grand Tours start all riders together each day. The Red/Yellow jersey is awarded to the rider with the lowest cumulative time sum, not the most stage victories. If a leader stays sheltered in the bunch, they finish with the same time as the stage winner.

Format Mechanics: Mass Start vs. Pursuit Format
Simultaneous Mass Start (Grand Tours): All riders start together at 00:00:00 every stage. Drafting allows team domestiques to shield their team captain from headwind. Time differentials only occur when riders are dropped on climbs, crosswinds, or time trials.
Hypothetical Pursuit Format: If riders started each morning based on prior day gaps, solo leaders would ride alone into headwinds, while a chasing peloton would quickly draft and absorb them, destroying competitive balance over 21 stages.
