True Gravity Vector & Fall Line

The ball breaks in the direction of the fall line (maximum downhill gradient). Because gravitational acceleration along slope $a_g = g \sin\theta$ is constant while friction deceleration drops ball speed, putts curve much sharper as they lose forward velocity near the cup.

The 17-Inch Capture Speed Rule

Dave Pelz and PGA Tour statistics show the optimal putt pace has enough energy to roll 17 inches past the cup if it missed. Too soft (dying in the hole) makes the ball susceptible to spike marks and lip-outs; too fast shrinks the effective hole diameter to zero.
