How the Ballistics & Catch Probability Engine Works

When a quarterback releases a deep pass downfield—such as the viral LSU highlight—the ball experiences 3D parabolic flight with aerodynamic drag, forward gravity decay, and gyroscopic spiral stability.

The receiver accelerates downfield along their assigned route tree (Go, Post, Corner, Cross), adjusting their stride to intersect the football's projected landing point. Simultaneously, defenders react to quarterback release cues, hip posture, and separation distance.

Catch Window & High-Point Mechanics

A receiver possesses a catch radius of approximately 7.5 feet vertically and 3.5 feet laterally. When the football arrives inside this envelope while the cornerback has inside or trailing leverage, the receiver can high-point the ball or adjust their body for a sideline toe-tap.

The Geometry of "Throw Him Open"

Leading a receiver by 2.0 to 3.5 yards on boundary fly routes drops the ball over the outside shoulder beyond the cornerback's back-turned recovery angle, minimizing pass breakups even in tight press-man coverage.
