Offensive Coordinator Play-Design Logic

In modern football schemes (Shanahan/McDaniel Outside Zone & Air Raid derivatives), an OC constructs passing concepts to create spatial and numerical dilemmas for coverage shells:

High-Low Stress: Placing two receivers along the same vertical plane forces flat defenders (e.g., Cover 2 corner or Cover 3 curl/flat) to abandon one route.
Horizontal Stretch: Concepts like Mesh or Levels create traffic (natural rubs) to separate against tight man-to-man coverage.
Safeties Displacement: Four Verticals and Post-Dig combinations exploit Middle-Of-Field Closed (MOFC) vs Middle-Of-Field Open (MOFO) leverage.

Expected Points Added (EPA) Model

Every play outcome computes situational EPA based on historical down, distance, and yard-line expected value transitions:

1st & 10 from 25: Baseline EV is approx +1.05 points. Gaining 6 yards increases EV to +1.48 (+0.43 EPA).
3rd Down Conversions: Moving the chains yields significant positive EPA spikes (+1.2 to +2.5 EPA depending on field position).
Turnovers / Sacks: Severe negative EPA penalties reflecting sudden changes in field positioning.
