Prior to Wes Welker joining the New England Patriots in 2007, slot receivers were predominantly considered third-down gadget options. Together with Tom Brady, Welker transformed the position into the heartbeat of modern offensive architecture.
Welker recorded 110+ receptions in 5 of his 6 seasons with New England (672 regular-season receptions across 93 games). Their signature concept was the two-way option route: Welker stem-read the nickel cornerback's leverage at 5 to 7 yards. If the defender played inside leverage, Welker broke to the sideline; if outside, he snapped sharply across the face into open turf.
Brady's ultra-quick average release time (often under 2.15 seconds) made the pass virtually un-blitzable, generating historic first-down conversion rates on 3rd-and-medium.
