Aerodynamic Physics Breakdown
This simulator implements fourth-order Runge-Kutta numerical integration using verified baseball aerodynamic data from Alan Nathan's physics of baseball research and MLB Statcast standards.
F_drag = 0.5 · ρ(T, P) · Cd(v) · A · v²
F_magnus = 0.5 · ρ(T, P) · Cl(S) · A · v²
F_magnus = 0.5 · ρ(T, P) · Cl(S) · A · v²
- Magnus Lift: Backspin creates upward circulation, keeping balls in the air longer to gain 20–35 ft of carry.
- Air Density (ρ): Warm air (90°F) and high elevation (Coors Field, 5200 ft) reduce drag by up to 18%, turning warning track flyouts into no-doubters.
- Seam Effects: Seam height and boundary layer turbulence shift the drag crisis boundary around 95–110 mph.
Outfield Dimensions & Fence Heights
Ballpark geometry dictates whether a 380-foot drive lands on the warning track or inside the second deck.
| Ballpark | Left (Wall) | Center | Right (Wall) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daikin Park (HOU) | 315' (19' Boxes) | 409' (10') | 326' (7') |
| Fenway Park (BOS) | 310' (37' Monster) | 390' (8') | 302' (3' Pesky) |
| Yankee Stadium (NYY) | 318' (8') | 408' (8') | 314' (8' Porch) |
| Coors Field (COL) | 347' (8') | 415' (8') | 350' (14') |
| Oracle Park (SF) | 339' (8') | 391' (8') | 309' (24' Wall) |
Statcast Batted Ball Zones
Exit speed and launch angle combine to create predictable batted ball classifications:
- Barrel: EV ≥ 98 mph and launch angle 26°–30° (expanding outward as EV increases). Yields an expected batting average > .500 and slugging > 1.500.
- Solid Contact: 95–105 mph with launch angle 18°–24° or 32°–36°.
- Flare / Burner: Low line drives with high hit probability, but lacking carry for home runs.
- Under / Weak Fly: Launch angle > 38° where drag absorbs horizontal velocity before reaching the fence.
