How Basketball Rebound & Putback Physics Works

The Long Shot = Long Rebound Rule

Statistically in modern basketball, three-point misses produce caroms that land 10 to 18 feet from the basket over 70% of the time. When a high-energy forward like Bobby Portis crashes from the weakside corner or wing, their entry acceleration must coincide precisely with rim impact so their upward jump coincides with the ball's second bounce or apex.

Restitution and Second-Jump Timing

Arena rims are calibrated with mechanical dampers (restitution ~0.60–0.70). A steeper shot arc (50°+) causes a flatter, more vertical rebound bounce, whereas flat arcs (38°–44°) trigger high-velocity horizontal kicks that reward relentless crashers who sprint on release rather than watching.
