Because the Sun is an extended light source (1.39 million km wide) rather than a single point, occluding celestial bodies cast compound shadows: the inner Umbra (total sunlight block), surrounding Penumbra (partial block), and the downstream Antumbra where the Moon appears smaller than the Sun.

📐 Why Eclipses Don't Happen Every 29.5 Days

A new moon and full moon happen every month, but eclipses require the Moon to cross one of two orbital nodes. The Moon's orbital plane is inclined by 5.14° to Earth's orbital plane (the ecliptic). Most months, the Moon passes well above or below the Sun-Earth line.
