  1. STEP 1
    Lock & Verify AirPort Time Capsule: Initiate one final backup under macOS 26/pre-27 to preserve snapshot integrity. Disconnect active backup daemon via tmutil disable.
  2. STEP 2
    Configure SMB3 Target Storage: On Synology DSM, QNAP QTS, or TrueNAS, enable SMB3 with "Time Machine over SMB" broadcast (mDNS Bonjour advertising _adisk._tcp and sys=waMa=0,adVF=0x100).
  3. STEP 3
    APFS Sparse Bundle Conversion / Relocation: Mount legacy .sparsebundle and use hdiutil convert to modern APFS container or initiate fresh clean seed backup to eliminate legacy HFS+ catalog corruption.
  4. STEP 4
    Mount & Authorize in System Settings: Execute sudo tmutil setdestination -a "smb://user@nas.local/TimeMachine". Verify packet signing and password storage in macOS Keychain.
