In baseball mathematics, a team's Elimination Number (commonly called the Tragic Number or reverse Magic Number) represents the combined total of trailing team losses and leading team wins that will mathematically eliminate the trailing club from division or wild-card contention.

When a trailing club's maximum achievable wins (current wins plus all remaining scheduled games) are strictly fewer than the current wins accumulated by the final playoff cutoff holder, the team is Officially Eliminated. Even if the trailing club finishes the season on an undefeated streak and the cutoff holder loses every single remaining contest, catching the leader remains mathematically impossible.
