Injury grading & base timelines
Grade 1 = mild (microtears, <10% fiber disruption). Grade 2 = moderate (partial tear, 10–50%). Grade 3 = severe (complete tear or >50%). Base medians come from MLB HITS database (2010–2024) and peer-reviewed RTW meta-analyses (Connell 2021, Bayer 2018, Erickson 2019).
Age & position adjustments
Age ≥30 adds a multiplicative factor of 1.15× to median recovery (linear interpolation 18–42). Position groups: Pitchers (lower limb) +10%, Catchers +15%, Infielders +5%, Outfielders +10%, DH/1B baseline. Running demand drives the delta.
Prior injury compounding
Each prior same-site injury adds 10% to median and increases re-injury hazard ratio by ~1.3× (Orchard 2013, MLB epidemiological data). The model caps at 5 priors (1.5× median max).
Probability bands & distribution
Recovery time is modeled as a log-normal distribution (positive skew matches RTW data). The 68% band = median × [exp(-σ), exp(+σ)]; 95% band = median × [exp(-2σ), exp(+2σ)]. σ ≈ 0.35 for muscle strains.
Playoff availability calculation
Wild Card Series = Day 180–185. Division Series = Day 188–198. Availability = P(return ≤ series start). The model integrates the log-normal CDF. "Likely" ≥66%, "Possible" 33–66%, "Unlikely" <33%.
Limitations & disclaimer
This tool uses population-level averages. Individual anatomy, rehab quality, team medical staff, pain tolerance, and game leverage all shift outcomes. Always consult club medical staff for real decisions. Data sources: MLB HITS, PubMed RTW meta-analyses, Baseball Prospectus injury archives.
