How the MLB Postseason Format Works
Major League Baseball features a 12-team postseason format (6 in the American League, 6 in the National League). The top two division winners in each league earn first-round byes straight to the Division Series (ALDS and NLDS).
By winning the rugged AL East and clinching the #1 overall seed in the American League as announced by Fox Sports MLB, the Tampa Bay Rays guarantee that any postseason series they play in the AL will run through their home ballpark, starting with the best-of-5 ALDS.

The Best-of-3 Wild Card Round
The No. 3 seed (lowest division winner) hosts No. 6 (Wild Card 3), while No. 4 (Wild Card 1) hosts No. 5 (Wild Card 2). All three games are played exclusively at the higher seed's home ballpark with no travel days.
Division Series Re-Seeding Policy
Unlike the NFL, MLB brackets do not re-seed. The #1 seed (Tampa Bay Rays) is fixed to face the winner of the #4 vs #5 Wild Card series, while the #2 seed faces the winner of the #3 vs #6 series.
